How it Works: Formula & Examples
Grade Point Average (GPA) is a commonly used indicator of a student&pos;s academic achievement. It's calculated by assigning numerical values to letter grades and averaging them based on course credits.
Grade Point System (Common Example):
- A+/A: 4.0 points
- A-: 3.7 points
- B+: 3.3 points
- B: 3.0 points
- B-: 2.7 points
- C+: 2.3 points
- C: 2.0 points
- C-: 1.7 points
- D+: 1.3 points
- D: 1.0 points
- F: 0.0 points
The formula for GPA is:
GPA = Total Grade Points / Total Credits
Where:
- Total Grade Points = Sum of (Grade Points for a Course * Credits for that Course)
- Total Credits = Sum of Credits for all Courses
Example:
Course | Grade | Credits | Grade Points |
---|---|---|---|
Math | A | 3 | 4.0 * 3 = 12.0 |
Science | B+ | 4 | 3.3 * 4 = 13.2 |
History | C | 3 | 2.0 * 3 = 6.0 |
Total Grade Points = $12.0 + 13.2 + 6.0 = 31.2$
Total Credits = $3 + 4 + 3 = 10$
GPA = 31.2 / 10 = 3.12
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a GPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a numerical summary of your academic performance, typically calculated by dividing the total grade points earned by the total credits attempted.
How do different grading systems affect GPA?
The calculator uses a standard 4.0 scale. If your institution uses a different scale, you might need to adjust the grade point values accordingly or use a calculator specific to your system.
Can I include incomplete courses?
Only include courses for which you have received a final grade and credits. Incomplete courses or courses without credits should not be factored into GPA calculation until completed.
